Module 5 Extract - Building the Website?
We have now explored 4 course modules - looking at the importance of preparation in Module 1, then in Modules 2, 3 and 4 we have explored the crucial 3 questions you must be able to answer before starting to design a website;
- Who is your website for?
- What do you want to say?
- How will you say it?
In this last module 5 we will be rounding up and concluding all this information and looking more closely at issues around actually building the website. This will include; how to choose a designer, working with a web development team, finding an illustrator, website maintenance, using a storyboard, holding page and wireframe to design and test the site before launch, using a pilot group to test the website, DDA and usability issues and some basic tips about marketing your website.
Finding a Website Designer Where we live in the South West of the UK, if we want to find a plumber or carpenter to do some work on our house, we nearly always ask our neighbours and friends nearby who they have been happy to hire and use. This isn’t a foolproof method, but reputation is a business’s most valuable tools; studies indicate that, on average, one dissatisfied customer will tell 11 others who on average will tell 5 others. That's 55 pieces of negative advertising from one disgruntled customer Conversely, if people are satisfied with the service they receive then they will be happy to recommend that service to others.
For most businesses, positive, word of mouth referrals are gold nuggets when it comes to finding and keeping new customers. We certainly find this to be the case at Webworlds – we have never advertised our services, all our work comes by way of positive referrals from current or previous clients.
The same principles can be applied to finding a good website designer. Why take pot luck or stick a pin in a list? Ask friends who have websites they are happy with to tell you who they used. Ask them what worked for them with this designer, and what didn’t. You will soon build up a group of recommended designers, then the choice is much easier; and much less risky.
There are literally millions of website designers in the world, mainly because the software to design sites is quite cheap to obtain and actually designing a basic graphic and text site is not that hard to do. There are also a lot of people spending many hours with their computer, perhaps even obsessed with their computer, who have built up a deep knowledge of the software; mainly because that is what they do all day. ..
The real skill in building a website is knowing how to work creatively and professionally with clients, how to communicate skillfully, a thorough knowledge of the IT and web industry, knowing a full range of modern design alternatives and possibilities; and having a good track record of design experience. Many people can work web design software, very few can do all these things.
Webworlds has nearly 20 years experience building websites, a fully portfolio of satisfied customers, and is constantly exploring and incorporating new ideas in the IT and Web industry ...
